Teri Biggs, whose battle with pancreatic cancer was profiled in the New Year's Day edition of the Valley Press, died Saturday at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Santa Clarita. She was 41.
Biggs is survived by her husband Tom and 5 year-old daughter Elizabeth.
"It's interesting that you see people on television that are given a short time to live, and they want to do things like jump out of an airplane or travel extensively," Biggs said in the article. "Chances are you're not going to have the energy to do all those things in order to live life to the fullest.
"I've found what's important to me is spending time with family and friends or simply watching a bird go by." the Palmdale resident said.
Biggs had beaten the odds by surviving more than a year after a surgery in which doctors removed her pancreas, spleen, gall bladder and half her stomach. Biggs said only 1% of pancreatic cancer patients survive five years.
"Medical science has made great inroads, but they still haven't found a cure. I really think the cure comes from inside us. Attitude is one of the things we have control of for ourselves. So is prayer," Biggs said.
A memorial service for Teri will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at Quartz Hill Presbyterian Church, 5837 West Avenue M, Quartz Hill.
Melanie Teller is making arrangements for a fund raising event to help finance Biggs' daughter's education.
